Dentistry and the World of Aesthetics

TMD

Temporomandibular dysfunction is a condition involving the jaw joint and the muscles that facilitate jaw movement, which may result in pain, restricted movement, and discomfort mainly due to the constant clenching or grinding of the teeth.

Symptoms can include jaw pain, tension headaches, neck pain and clicking noises in the joint.

TMD is frequently self-limiting and may improve with conservative management strategies.

Botox in the masseter muscles is another option available to treat these symptoms.

Gummy Smile

A gummy smile occurs when an excessive amount of gum tissue4 typically more than 2 mm-is visible above the upper teeth when smiling.

It is caused by factors such as hyperactive upper lip muscles or excessive gum tissue. Old crown margins can be more visible and can show "grey shadows" or darkening around the gum.

While not a medical concern, it can affect self-confidence and the willingness to smile freely.

The gum visibility can be dramatically reduced with Botox.
